on a Jewish approach to rationing

The coronavirus pandemic has raised a host of problem for bioethics, the field charged with negotiating ethical dilemmas in health care. This three-session course will examine some of these dilemmas as they pertain to the Jewish community, broadly defined. We will begin with a discussion of how Jewish leaders have attempted to negotiate the at times tense relationship between ritual adherence, public health, and religious freedom. We will then examine how Jewish religious sources might provide a different perspective on ongoing debates about the rationing of scarce medical resources. And we will conclude with a discussion of how coronavirus-related health care decisions have been negotiated in the Israeli-Palestinian relationship. Participants from all backgrounds are welcome.
